Osaka

There is a lot to be said for thorough cleanliness, spartan simplicity, all access bathroom and shower stall and $16 a night in Osaka. Surprisingly quiet and comfortable with a free snack of Octopus fritters, takiyaki, thrown in and a full moon over Japan.

Detroit

Connecting with your flight in Detroit, they prepare you with visual psychedelics.
This rather effective notion could be applied in other stress related environments: dental offices, the DMV, family gatherings.
Way to go Detroit.

Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa is undergoing a major boom in construction. Though the country has its economic hurtles, things are moving forward. The weather seems perfect to me, sunny days in the 70s. The locals say it is hotter than usual and express concern over global warming. Most people here think very highly of President Obama and by extension America. I do not think they are following our election politics too closely.

Ethiopian Air

The seat looks like a throne.
Never taken a trip quite like this, business class on Ethiopian Air. Very nice, lots of leg room and attendants providing for one’s every need. Business class, Business class, probably never to be experienced again, but for now it makes for a convincing mantra.
It is not lost on me that as I fly into Addis Ababa I become the privileged by virtue of the high standard of living afforded to those of my nationality. Time to expand the head space.

How The Other Half Lives – Day One

n

Here’s the thing, for some time now I have been poor. Not really as poor as some, but living hand to mouth without a lot of extra. Being the spoiled person that I am, this has been a trial. So when a friend, a friend with whom I have a storied and unpleasant past, somewhat resolved, we will call him Mr. ( Y would be too obvious ) W, asked me to accompany him on a business trip to Ethiopia, I said why not. After all, how often does one get the chance of an all expenses paid vacation to anywhere? Certainly not lately for me.

We had to act fast as the itinerary was forever changing. This involved a stop on our way to Ethiopia at the Washington, D.C. watering hole, the Old Ebbitt Grill, where my dinner, with delicious salt crusted bread, invigorating mixed green salad, came to me, steamy and red.
