Ethiopian Air

The seat looks like a throne.
Never taken a trip quite like this, business class on Ethiopian Air. Very nice, lots of leg room and attendants providing for one’s every need. Business class, Business class, probably never to be experienced again, but for now it makes for a convincing mantra.
It is not lost on me that as I fly into Addis Ababa I become the privileged by virtue of the high standard of living afforded to those of my nationality. Time to expand the head space.

How The Other Half Lives – Day One

n

Here’s the thing, for some time now I have been poor. Not really as poor as some, but living hand to mouth without a lot of extra. Being the spoiled person that I am, this has been a trial. So when a friend, a friend with whom I have a storied and unpleasant past, somewhat resolved, we will call him Mr. ( Y would be too obvious ) W, asked me to accompany him on a business trip to Ethiopia, I said why not. After all, how often does one get the chance of an all expenses paid vacation to anywhere? Certainly not lately for me.

We had to act fast as the itinerary was forever changing. This involved a stop on our way to Ethiopia at the Washington, D.C. watering hole, the Old Ebbitt Grill, where my dinner, with delicious salt crusted bread, invigorating mixed green salad, came to me, steamy and red.

Midsummer!

One day the branch is bare, the next, ergonomic condos constructed.

It is still winter. It is colder here than in Moscow, Russia and will continue to be throughout most of the next week. Hurrah! Time to break out the hand warmers.

Waiting

I love weather. It is endlessly variable and fascinating. This year it has provided us with plenty to do, not an easy winter this. Being plunged into the icy firmament of the far north makes us appreciate with fondness gentler times and as January nears it’s end we are left with still apprehensive questions which with time might soon be answered.
Just how low does the temperature have to fall before the pipes break in the basement?
For what length of time does a person have to stand outside without gloves before the fingers lose all sensation?
Will my car start in the morning?
Is it possible to throw hot water into the frosty ether without getting burned?
What will my heating bill look like at the end of the month?
Can I maintain the status quo of a two blanket bed?
Will the snow ever go away?
Is February going to be like January or will it be worse?
Will spring eventually come?

Cold

It is cold. The folks in the true upper Midwest who have been clasped in the arms of frozen winter for weeks and weeks are probably rolling their collective eyes. Still for me, untried this year and battle soft, it is cold!
